IndP--Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkur) includes Home
Rule Party (Heimastjornaflokkur), Hardline Independence Party
(Sjálfstæðisflokkur “thversum”), and Moderate Independence
Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkur “langsum”) in the elections of 1916-1922,
and includes the breakaway groups Commonwealth (Thjodveldismenn),
Republic Party (Lydveldisflokkur), and, in the elections of
1987 and 1991, the Citizens’ Party (Borgaraflokkur); SD--
Social Democrats (Althyduflokkur) includes Social Democratic
Federation (Bandalag Jafnatharmanna)in 1983 and People’s Movement
in 1995; ProgP--Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkur)(formed
by merger of two farmers’ parties, Baendaflokkur and Ohadir
Baendur, after 1916 election) includes the breakaway Farmer’s

Party (Thjodarflokkur)in 1983 and 1987; WL--Women’s List (Kvennalista
in 1920s, and Samtök um Kvennalista since 1983); LP--Liberal
Party (Frjáslyndiflokkur); CPI/PA--Communist Party of Iceland
(Kommunistaflokkur), later United Socialist Party and People’s
Alliance. In 1938, the Communist Party merged with a Social
Democrat splinter group to form the United Socialist Party
(Sosialistaflokkur). In 1956, the People’s Alliance (Althyudubandalag)
was formed by the United Socialist Party and another Social
democrat splinter group. It was joined by the National Preservation
Party in 1963; ULL: Union of Liberals and Leftists. Green–Greens
